The Royal Arch Merionethshire is an historic Knights Templar order of Freemasonry that has been in existence since 1641. The order is based in Merionethshire, Wales, and is one of the oldest and most respected Masonic orders in the British Isles. The Order traces its origins back to Edward I’s reign, when a group of Freemasons met regularly in a chapel near the Welsh border and formed a fraternal society dedicated to preserving the ancient traditions of Freemasonry. Over the centuries, members of the Royal Arch Merionethshire have been involved in numerous charitable works and philanthropic activities throughout Wales, England, and Scotland. The Order continues to be active today, with members across the world participating in regional meetings and anniversary celebrations. The history of Royal Arch Merionethshire dates back to the 11th century. It is believed to have originated in Wales around the same time as the Order of Free Masons, with whom it is closely associated. The earliest known records of Royal Arch Merionethshire are from 1660 when it was recorded that a lodge existed in Barmouth. From this time, the Order spread throughout Wales and other parts of Britain, with lodges being established in London, Edinburgh and York.
During the 18th century, the Order underwent a period of revival as more and more people joined and its influence increased significantly. This led to the formal formation of the Grand Lodge of Royal Arch Merionethshire in 1798, which set out a structure for how lodges would be run and regulated. By this point, there were almost 80 lodges across Wales alone.
In 1813, Royal Arch Merionethshire became part of a larger organisation called The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). This allowed lodges from different regions to come together and cooperate under one governing body. The UGLE still governs over Masonic lodges today.
Throughout the 19th century, Royal Arch Merionethshire continued to grow and expand its reach across Britain. By 1900 it had become one of Britain’s largest Masonic orders with hundreds of lodges nationwide. Today there are still a number of active lodges in Merionethshire where members come together for meetings and ceremonies.
