History of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar were a religious order of warrior monks founded in Jerusalem in the early 12th century. They were originally formed to protect pilgrims on their journeys to and from the Holy Land, but soon developed into a powerful military force. The Templars became known for their bravery and skill in battle, and their influence spread throughout Europe. During the Crusades, they served as advisers to European kings and queens, and even established their own kingdom within the Holy Land.

The Knights Templar were disbanded in 1307 by Pope Clement V, following accusations of heresy and other charges. In 1312, Pope Clement issued a papal bull which officially abolished the Order. Despite this, some members of the Order continued to practice their faith in secret, leading to rumors that the Templars had survived in some form or another.

The legacy of the Knights Templar continues today with numerous organizations claiming direct descent from them. The most notable of these is the Order of Malta, which was founded in 1099 as a hospital for pilgrims at Jerusalem’s Church of St John. It is now an international humanitarian organization providing medical care throughout Europe and beyond. Other organizations which trace their roots back to the Templars include Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism and several military orders such as the Teutonic Knights and Hospitallers.

The story of the Knights Templar has also been immortalized in popular culture, with books, films and television shows depicting them as heroic figures who defended Christianity against its enemies during medieval times. As such, they remain an important part of our collective cultural memory today.

The Founding of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar was a religious order founded in 1120 by nine knights, led by Hugues de Payens, and endorsed by the French King Baldwin II. The goal of the order was to protect pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem and to defend Christian holy sites from Muslim invasion. The order was officially sanctioned by Pope Honorius II in 1129, and the Templars quickly became one of the most powerful military orders in Europe. They were given land, money, and support from various European rulers, including King Philip IV of France.

The Templars built a network of fortifications across Europe and developed a reputation as an effective fighting force. They were also involved in banking and finance, lending money to rulers throughout Europe and securing large sums of money for their own use. By the end of the 13th century, they had amassed immense wealth and power, which made them a target for rival powers. In 1307, King Philip IV of France arrested many prominent Templars on charges of heresy and corruption. This ultimately led to the dissolution of the order in 1312 by Pope Clement V.

Today, there are few physical remains of the Templars’ presence in Thurrock, but there are still some interesting places associated with them. One such place is St Peter’s Church in Grays which was founded by the Order sometime around 1160-1180AD. Another is Orsett Hall which was built in 1290AD for Sir Richard De Beauchamp who was connected to the Knights Templar through his wife Alice de la Mare who inherited her family’s manor house near Grays Thurrock from her father Sir Walter de la Mare who had been a Knight Templar himself.

The legacy of the Knights Templar lives on today through modern versions such as Masonic Orders that have adopted many elements from their original rituals and philosophies. While their physical presence may no longer be felt in Thurrock, they will always be remembered as brave warriors who fought for justice and freedom during one of Europe’s most turbulent times.

Symbolism and Practices of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar was a religious military order founded in the 12th century. Originally established to protect Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land, they became a powerful and influential force in Europe. The Knights Templar have become well known for their symbolism and practices, which are still studied today.

The most recognizable symbol associated with the Templars is the red cross on a white background. This symbol has been used by the Order since its foundation and is still used today by many organizations, including the Red Cross. The red cross was also used as a rallying call during battles, with knights raising their swords in salute when they heard it.

The Templars also adopted a variety of other symbols to represent their beliefs and practices. These included various animals, such as lions, eagles and even dragons, which were thought to represent strength and courage. The Templars also adopted symbols from other religions, such as astrological signs and ancient gods. These symbols were often depicted on their shields or banners during battle, allowing them to identify fellow knights in the midst of combat.

The Templars also had an extensive code of conduct that stipulated how they should behave both in battle and in everyday life. This code included chivalry towards enemies, respect for women, honesty in all dealings and abstinence from excessive drinking or gambling. They also followed a strict code of silence which they believed would help protect their secrets from non-members of the Order.

The Knights Templar also took part in numerous rituals throughout their history. One of these was called investiture – a ceremony where new members were invested into the Order with symbols or tokens such as rings or coins bearing their seal – demonstrating that they had been accepted into the brotherhood of knights. Other rituals included prayer services held every morning before battle began, as well as religious ceremonies such as baptisms or marriages held at special sites around Europe like castles or cathedrals.

In addition to these rituals, the Knights Templar also developed unique forms of warfare that allowed them to gain an advantage over their opponents in battle. These tactics included using light cavalry charges to break enemy formations and launching surprise attacks from outflanking positions at night when visibility was low. They were also experts at siege warfare tactics, using powerful siege engines such as trebuchets or catapults to breach castle walls with great accuracy.

Symbolism and practices played an important role in defining who the Knights Templar were as an organisation and what they stood for during their long history – honourable behaviour both on and off the battlefield; respect for all beliefs; loyalty to one another; chivalry towards enemies; religious devotion; secrecy about their activities; tactical innovation on the battlefield; and strong adherence to codes of conduct within their ranks – all traits that still resonate today when we think about what it means to be a knightly order like the Templars once were.
