Royal Arch Swindon

The history of Royal Arch Swindon dates back to the early 18th century. The original Royal Arch chapter was formed in 1790 under the name of Swindon Chapter No.1. This chapter was later renamed as Royal Arch Chapter No.1. It was founded by several local masons and members of the local Swindon Lodge, which had been in existence since 1750. The members of the Royal Arch Chapter No.1 were instrumental in forming other chapters throughout Wiltshire and even in other counties such as Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

In 1871, the Grand Lodge of England granted a Charter to the Royal Arch Chapter No.1, making it an independent body, which eventually became known as The Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in England and Wales. This charter gave the Supreme Grand Chapter full powers to regulate its own affairs and admit members from any part of England or Wales who were regularly initiated Mark Masons or Past Masters in a Craft Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).

Throughout its existence, Royal Arch Swindon has continued to maintain a high standard for its members through events, lectures and charitable works both locally and nationally. Today, it is one of several chapters that still operate within Wiltshire under the banner of UGLE’s Supreme Grand Chapter.
