The Royal Arch Derby is a historic Freemasonry-affiliated organization in the English city of Derby. The history of the organization dates back to 1770, when it was established as one of the first Provincial Grand Chapters in England. The original Grand Chapter was led by Thomas Lister, 4th Baron Ribblesdale and consisted of 15 founding members.
In 1785, the Grand Chapter purchased a property on Iron Gate, where they built their first permanent meeting hall. This building is still in use today and is now known as ‘The Old Masonic Hall’. It continues to be used for Royal Arch meetings and ceremonies, as well as for other Masonic activities.
The Royal Arch Derby has gone through several changes over its long history. In 1813, it received a new charter from the United Grand Chapter of England and changed its name from the Provincial Grand Chapter to the Supreme Grand Chapter.
In 1867, it formed a subordinate chapter (now known as St John’s Lodge) and in 1875 it adopted its current name – The Royal Arch Derby. In addition to this, several other subordinate chapters have been established since then.
Today, the Royal Arch Derby is one of the oldest and most active Masonic organizations in England. It continues to provide charitable services to people in need throughout Derbyshire and beyond while also providing an important link between Freemasonry past and present.
Royal Arch Derby
The Royal Arch Derby is an impressive and unique monument situated in the heart of the city of Derby, England. It is a Grade II listed building and is one of the few surviving structures from the medieval period. The monument was built in 1475 by King Edward IV, as a memorial to his loyal supporters who fought alongside him in the Battle of Bosworth Field. It stands proudly over the city skyline and is a symbol of strength and unity.
The Royal Arch Derby consists of an archway made from limestone and ashlar stone blocks, with four arches that are topped by a segmental pediment. The archway leads to a central courtyard which has a small fountain surrounded by four stone pillars. The design of the archway is highly ornamental, with intricate carvings depicting figures from English history such as Richard III and Henry Tudor.
The Royal Arch Derby has been restored several times over the centuries and still retains much of its original charm. It has also been used as a meeting point for many important events throughout history, such as coronations, funerals, processions and military parades. Today it serves as an important landmark within Derby’s city center, representing the rich heritage of this historic city.
Interestingly, there is also an underground passage beneath the archway which was believed to have been used during wartime as an escape route for citizens fleeing from enemy forces. This secret tunnel was discovered in 1878 by workmen who were restoring the monument at that time.
The Royal Arch Derby is one of only three surviving medieval monuments in England and is considered to be one of the most significant monuments in Britain today. It has also been featured on many films due to its impressive architecture and historical significance.
Membership
Membership in the Royal Arch Derby is open to any individual who is a Mason in good standing in a regular Masonic lodge. All members of Royal Arch Derby are expected to abide by the rules and regulations set out by the organization. In addition, members must be willing to adhere to the laws and regulations of their respective lodges and jurisdictions.
Meetings
The Royal Arch Derby holds monthly meetings at different locations throughout the year. At each meeting, members will discuss various topics related to Freemasonry, as well as any other matters of interest to them. Members are also encouraged to participate in social activities such as dinners and other events organized by the organization.
Legislation
The legislation that governs the Royal Arch Derby is set out in its Constitution and By-Laws, which are established by its General Assembly. All members must abide by these laws and regulations when participating in meetings or other activities organized by the organization. Any member who does not comply with these laws may be subject to disciplinary action or may even be expelled from the organization if found guilty of violating its rules.
Financial Matters
All financial matters related to Royal Arch Derby are managed according to established guidelines and policies. The organization has a Treasurer who is responsible for managing all funds received from members, as well as any other income generated from events or activities organized by the organization. A detailed breakdown of all financial transactions is reviewed at each meeting, with any discrepancies being addressed immediately.
Code of Conduct
The Royal Arch Derby expects all its members to abide by a strict code of conduct at all times while representing the organization or participating in any of its activities or events. This includes respect for all individuals regardless of their religious beliefs, race, gender, or sexual orientation; respect for property; and respect for the law. The organizations has zero tolerance for any form of harassment or discrimination against any individual or group within its membership ranks and reserves the right to take disciplinary action against any individual found guilty of violating these codes of conduct.
