Our mission is to make the history of this ancient order more accessible and enjoyable for everyone in our community. We are actively engaged in local projects, such as organising educational events and talks, creating digital resources and publications, and helping to maintain monuments and ruins associated with the Knights Templar. We also work closely with other organisations in the area to ensure that our research is up-to-date and accurate. The history of the Knights Templar in Flintshire dates back to the 12th century. During this time, several knights from the area joined this famous religious and military order, which was founded in 1119 by Hugh de Payens. These knights helped to protect pilgrims who were travelling to Jerusalem, as well as defending the Holy Land.

During the 13th century, the Knights Templar in Flintshire had a strong presence in the area and were involved in many battles and skirmishes. They also built several castles throughout Flintshire during this period, such as Caergwrle Castle and Hawarden Castle.

In 1307, King Philip IV of France arrested all of the Knights Templar in his realm and began persecuting them for heresy. Eventually, most of them were executed or imprisoned. However, some managed to escape France and fled to England, where they settled in Flintshire and other areas along the Welsh border.

Due to their high status within society at this time, many of the Knights Templar who arrived in Flintshire were given land and wealth by English nobles. They also continued to participate in military activities, such as fighting against Scottish raids into England during The Great War (1332-1337).

By 1312 however, King Edward II declared that all remaining Knights Templar should either join another order or be disbanded entirely. Therefore most of them eventually dispersed throughout Europe or returned home to their families.

In modern times, there are still many reminders of the Knights Templar’s presence in Flintshire – such as a number of churches with connections to their order which still stand today. Additionally a number of local societies have been established to preserve their memory and honour their legacy within Welsh history today.

Overview of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar was an order of Christian knights formed during the 12th century in response to the need for protection of pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. The order was founded by nine French knights and was given papal recognition by Pope Honorius II. The Templars were a feared and respected military force, and eventually became one of the most powerful organizations in Europe. They were especially influential in France, where their presence was felt throughout the Middle Ages. The Templars were disbanded in 1312 due to allegations of heresy and financial irregularities.

Flintshire

The county of Flintshire has a long association with the Knights Templar. In 1144, Hugh de Payens, one of the nine original founders of the Order, granted a charter for land in Flintshire to be used as a base for his knights. This area became known as the Temple Barony and included several manors and villages in Flintshire. During the Middle Ages, it was common for wealthy families to give land to religious orders such as the Knights Templar so that they could use it to build churches and monasteries. The Templars were also granted permission by King Henry II to build castles around Flintshire, which they did at Hawarden and Ewloe. These castles served both as defensive fortifications against invaders and as bases from which they could launch crusades into Wales or Ireland.

In addition to granting land, King Henry II also gave financial support to the Knights Templar in Flintshire. This allowed them to build churches, monasteries, castles, roads and bridges throughout Flintshire which still remain today. The Order also set up commanderies (local administrative units) throughout England and Wales which allowed them to manage their estates more efficiently. As part of this process they established a chapter house at Hawarden Castle where meetings between members could take place.

The Order’s presence in Flintshire ended when it was dissolved by Pope Clement V in 1312 after allegations of heresy and financial irregularities had been made against them by King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V himself. Despite this setback, many reminders of their legacy remain today including churches built by them which are still standing throughout Flintshire such as St Mary’s Church at Ewloe Castle or St John’s Church at Hawarden Castle.
